An inlay or onlay are procedures used to restore a decayed or damaged tooth. This procedure may be recommended if you have a tooth with decay or other damage and can help to safely support a filling during the replacement or restoration of that filling. This service is performed if the damage has not advanced to require a dental crown. Inlays and onlays do not require the removal of healthy tooth structure.
Inlays and onlays may be used when existing fillings need to be removed or replaced and can help prolong the life of your tooth. They are made from highly durable material that can last for many years with proper care.
How are inlays and onlays applied?
Our dentist removes your old filling and any visible decay, then takes an impression of your tooth. This impression is sent to a dental lab to be custom-made. In the meantime, during your visit, a temporary inlay or onlay will be applied while the permanent one is being custom made for your next appointment. When the permanent inlay or onlay is ready, the dentist removes the temporary inlay or onlay, disinfects the area, and begins the final fitting. When the fit feel right and you are comfortable with it, the inlay or onlay is then bonded in place with a strong resin adhesive, and then it is polished for a smoothly integrated look.
To our valued patients: Please remember that everyone’s results will be different. You are unique, and so are your teeth. We look forward to consulting with you, and will provide our expertise in anticipating what procedures will be best to achieve your desired results.
